Kolkata, February 26, 2018 – To support Purulia district administration’s bid to spread awareness on hygiene for women, SVF, Eastern India’s largest movie production house organised a special show of Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte-starrer Padman at SVF Cinemas in Purulia on February 22 for the Kanyashree girls. SVF incidentally was also the distributor of Padman in Eastern India states.
More than 250 girls watched the Bollywood film with a social message at the movie theatre in the district headquarters. The show was held with the help of the Purulia district administration in partnership with SVF Cinemas which had invited the girls – the beneficiaries of the West Bengal government’s award-winning, highly successful programme for girls.
Directed by R. Balki, Padman has caused a stir in the country by shattering the taboo that still exists around the use of sanitary napkins especially in rural India, where women are reluctant to go for disposable pads since they are expensive. Worried about his wife’s menstrual hygiene, Akshay Kumar, playing Lakshmikant Chauhan in the film, urges his wife Gayatri, played by Radhika Apte, to ditch the cloth in favour of sanitary napkins, in a move that seeks to empower rural women.
‘’We always want to do our bit for the society we live in. This special screening of Padman, which has a very strong social message, is our way of saluting the Kanyashree girls in Bengal and we are thankful to Purulia district administration for giving us this opportunity,’’ said Mahendra Soni, Co-founder and Director, SVF.
Continuing this initiative, SVF Cinemas Krishnanagar will also organize a similar activity on February 28 for more than 250 girls.
