Aparna Sen’s ‘Ghawre Baire Aaj’ is the modern day adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic novel Ghare Baire. Starring Anirban Bhattacharya, Jisshu Sengupta and Tuhina Das in the lead and Anjan Dutt and Rwitobroto Mukherjee in key roles this film surely triggers nostalgia.
While the film hasn’t yet hit the theatres, it has already bagged its first festival award. Aparna Sen jointly won the Best Director award for the socio-political drama alongside ‘BulBul Can Sing’ director Rima Das at the 10th Jagaran Film Festival held in Mumbai recently.
While Anirban Bhattacharya will be seen as Nikhilesh, Jisshu Sengupta will essay the character of Sandip. In 1984 these two roles were supremely enacted by Victor Banerjee and Soumitra Chatterjee respectively in Satyajit Ray’s screen adaptation of the same novel. Young actress Tuhina Das has been cast as Brinda, a modern take on the character Bimala which was played by Swatilekha Sengupta in the Ray classic. Tuhina was earlier seen in Arindam Sil’s ‘Aschhe Abar Shabor’. Anjan Dutt will be seen as Mastarmoshai, which was earlier played by Manoj Mitra in Ray’s film.
Tagore’s ‘Ghare Baire’ is all about the love triangle of Nikhilesh, his wife Bimala and his friend Sandip. When Bimala realises the complex emotions of her relationship with Sandip, it marks her growth as a person.
