Uma song: ‘Jaago Uma’ speaks of despair, dauntless spirit and triumph

The song offers a glimpse into the story of Uma, which features real-life father-daughter Jisshu and Sara Sengupta, Anjan Dutt, Sayantika Banerjee, Srabanti Chatterjee and Anirban Bhattacharya.

‘Jaago Uma’, the title track of Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film Uma, was released on Saturday (19 May) amidst festive celebrations at Durga Bari in Kolkata’s Ballygunge. Composed and written by Anupam Roy, the song is sung by National Award winning vocalist Rupankar Bagchi.

The song offers a comprehensive glimpse to the story of Uma, which features real-life father-daughter Jisshu and Sara Sengupta, Anjan Dutt, Sayantika Banerjee, Srabanti Chatterjee and Anirban Bhattacharya in important roles.

Himadri (Jisshu Sengupta), a desperate father is ready to do the impossible and fulfil the wish of his terminally ill daughter Uma (Sara Sengupta). His undaunted struggle to recreate Durga puja off season for Uma, who doesn’t have much time to live, is presented through a series of visuals in the song. His strenuous relationship with estranged wife Menoka (Sayantika Banerjee) and the constant conflicts with religious fanatics (Anirban Bhattacharya and Babul Supriyo) makes his attempt even more tedious.

The song also brings forth the turmoil of the failed director (Anjan Dutt), who wants give a new meaning to his own life by helping Himadri.

Uma’s joy of experiencing the grandeur of the festival and her father’s success at overcoming all the hurdles are the moments that truly lift the mood.

Rupankar’s rendition manifests in multiple layers as the lyrics speaks of despair, dauntless spirit and triumph. In the song, Himadri’s achievement in making Uma’s last wish come true is aptly compared to the awakening of goddess Durga (Jaago Uma), who is worshipped for her divine energy.

“Uma is slowly awakening as 1 June is fast nearing! ‘Jaago Uma’ best describes the feel of the movie and awakens our soul. Rupankar once again weaves magic through his voice and Anupam (Roy), carries it forward with his magnificent composition,” exclaimed the director at the event.

Uma is scheduled to hit the screens on 8 June.
