From the lyrics, it occurs that the father (Jisshu Sengupta) is dedicating a song of loss to his daughter.
‘Hariye Jawar Gaan’, the first song from Srijit Mukerji’s upcoming film Uma, was launched by SVF Entertainment Pvt Ltd today. The song has been sung by music composer and lyricist, Anupam Roy. The other five songs from the film will be released soon.
The song, beginning in a serene location in Switzerland, gradually reveals the relationship between Himadri (Jisshu Sengupta) and his wife Menoka (Sayantika Banerjee). It offers glimpses into the gradual build-up of their romance, marriage and the birth of Uma, leading to their separation for unknown reasons.
Meanwhile, the storyline of the song also delves into Himadri’s helplessness at discovering her daughter Uma’s (Sara Sengupta) terminal illness. It also simultaneously shows Menoka’s distress at finding Uma receiving motherly affection from another woman (Srabanti Chatterjee).

The song is an ode to the bygone days of Himadri’s conjugal days, as well as the inevitable loss of his dearest daughter that awaits him. From the lyrics, it occurs that the father is dedicating a song of loss to his daughter.
Music composer Roy excels in putting the deepest sentiments into words, but the tune lacks in originality. It seems he tries hard to draw and keep attention on the lyrics, but fails.
Uma tells the story of a girl battling a terminal disease. As her father Himadri learns that she doesn’t have much time to live, he puts all his efforts to fulfil the last wish of his daughter to celebrate Durga Puja in Kolkata.
Roy, who has previously worked with Mukherji, said, “Uma is a passion project for all of us, as it has different emotions attached to it. The film is close and the songs are closer as they reveal to the audience the beautiful tale of how the journey of Uma started!”
The director of the film went on to say, “Anupam Roy has done a wonderful job as a music director. ‘Hariye Jawar Gaan’ is the first song which forays into the audience’s mind and builds a road to prepare them for Uma’s tale.”
The film has already been recognised at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2018, London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) 2018, India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA) 2018, Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2018, Reelworld Film Festival Toronto 2018 and Habitat Film Festival New Delhi.
