“People Engage in Sex But Shy Away From Speaking The Word”- Actor Rajdeep Gupta’s Candid Interview on Web Series Japani Toy (Sholoana Bangaliana Exclusive)

Actor Rajdeep Gupta will be seen portraying the character of Joy Banerjee in Hoichoi’s new web series Japani Toy. This is the actor’s first work in a web-series. Sholoana Bangaliana correspondent caught up with the actor in an exclusive chat about the character that he portrays. Excerpts..

Priyanka Dutta, Sholoana Bangaliana- Tell us something about Joy..

Rajdeep Gupta- Joy is an open minded guy who lives in North Kolkata. He may seem a bit weird to many but in reality he is extremely broad minded. After the metro incident, I have been coming across many Joy’s in social media. He is just like them.

You have worked in a web series before in Hindi, but this is your debut work in Bengali. How was the work experience?

Rajdeep Gupta- The experience has been good. However the highlight of the work was the script and the wonderful story. We, actors always say that this is different. But truth be told, this character is something unique and so is the story.

How was the experience of working with director Sourav Chakraborty?

Rajdeep Gupta- He is a focussed director who knows what he wants. When he read the script to me, he also described in details what he wanted from the character of Joy. He gives the actors a good amount of space. However he also knows how to extract the acting from the actors as per his needs.

Since Joy becomes the owner of sex toy store, how much fun did you have while shooting those parts?

Rajdeep Gupta- Oh!! We used to have much fun during the shooting. I remember a scene which was a dream sequence and I was doing the campaign. Bananas were covered in condoms and when a kid was trying to join the campaign, his father warned him that he would be made to wear a condom. Many such incidents happened while shooting for the web series. There was also a sequence where I was the only guy in the midst of many women. I was just wearing my underwear. This was a new experience for all of us.

How was your work experience with Ishaa?

Rajdeep Gupta- Ishaa’s first work in television was with me. We worked for eight months together and hence we know each other’s nerves. We know how the other will react in a certain situation. That helped a lot. Ishaa has developed as an actress very much. Now she is more open and she knows many aspects of the art of acting. We loved working together.

With so much happening around us, how do you think the audience will react to Japani Toy?

Rajdeep Gupta- Well, I think there will be mixed reaction from the audience. The comments on the trailer are already going that way. People like to engage in sex but they hate to say this word aloud. This hypocrisy is what has been shown in this web series. This is not a sex comedy but a dark comedy. The use of the word Sex is just a means to an end.

We hope that Rajdeep and the team’s efforts shines through and the audience love Japani Toy as much as they loved working in it.
