Srijit Mukherji begins shooting for Gumnaami, starring Prosenjit Chatterjee

The film is based on the story of Gumnaami Baba, who some believe was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose living out the last days of his life in disguise.

Srijit Mukherji began shooting for his upcoming film Gumnaami yesterday, 27 May. The director shared photos of the mahurat on Twitter. Along with his team, lead star Prosenjit Chatterjee and actor Anirban Bhattacharya are seen in the photos.

Gumnaami is based on the story of Gumnaami Baba, an ascetic who lived in North India and who some believe was actually Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose living out his last days in disguise.

The SVF team first launched the poster of the film on Bose’s birthday in January this year. In the poster, Gumnaami Baba was seen sitting with his face towards a wall, featuring newspaper clippings of Bose’s expedition of forming his Indian National Army and his mission for India’s independence.

While it was widely reported that Bose died in a plane crash in the last days of World War II on the island of Taiwan (then Formosa) in 1945, many continued to believe he returned to India in disguise and stayed secretly in Uttar Pradesh.

After Gumnaami Baba’s death, people claimed to have discovered strong connections in various notes and documents with Bose and the people he knew before his reported death.

The matter remains a mystery, as neither the Uttar Pradesh government nor the central government has been able to confirm Gumnaami Baba’s identity. However, Bose’s niece Lalita Bose was convinced, partially, that the documents and notes belonged to none other than Netaji.

Mukherji is yet to reveal the rest of the film’s cast.
