Srijit Mukherji is making a biopic on Swapna Barman, who made India proud by winning the heptathlon gold at the 2018 Asian Games. Sohini Sarkar is playing the gifted athlete in the film. Swapna was 21 when she became the first athlete, not only from Bengal but also India, to win a heptathlon gold at the Asian Games. And the journey to the gold was certainly not easy for the girl who was born in a poor family with six toes on each foot.
Announcing the biopic, Srijit said, “We have taken the life rights of Swapna and can make a film on her. She’s not only the pride of Bengal, but has also made the nation proud with her achievement at such a young age and that too after enduring so much. The film will focus on her life, her struggles and her achievements.”
He also informed us that Sohini will be soon beginning a rigorous workshop under Swapna’s coach, Subhash Sarkar, to prepare for the role. “Sohini will also meet Swapna to know more about the struggles she went through, how she prepared herself and how she is in real life. This knowledge will definitely help her make the character look more real on screen. But I won’t go on the floors till Sohini has an athletic body. If I’ve to wait a year for that, I’ll do that,” Srijit added.
Sohini, who is looking forward to her first sports film, told us, “I’ve never done a film like this before. And I always wanted to work in a sports film. Getting a chance to play Swapna on screen is indeed an honour. She is our pride. I’ll start my training soon and hope I can do justice to her life.”
