‘Kuler Achaar’ trailer delves deep into the existential crisis in marital life

Jun 29, 2022 Publication : The Times of India

‘Kuler Achaar’ sees Madhumita Sarcar and Vikram Chatterjee pairing up for the first time. The Sudeep Das directorial which is set to release in theatres on July 15 addresses certain social issues. The trailer of this slice-of-a-life drama is already out and it aptly sums up the main theme of the film.

‘Kuler Achaar’ is an out-and-out family drama that is not only women-centric in its narrative but also puts effort in upholding the true nature of bond and affection a family should ideally share. The trailer starts with police harassing Madhumita’s character Mithi and her husband Pritam (Vikram Chatterjee) at a hotel during their honeymoon. They can’t prove their marriage as the couple has different surnames and soon the two are up against more trouble which makes the situation worse. While Mithi has been backed by her mother-in-law (Indrani Halder) Pritam’s father (Sujan Mukhopadhyay) not happy with Mithi’s reluctance to change her surname after marriage. Interestingly, Pritam is a liberal husband and wants to keep his family together but one key scene in the trailer hints at the trouble in his marital relationship with Mithi also.

Meanwhile, Indrani Haldar is also making a comeback to the big screen with this family drama after a hiatus of almost five years. She plays Madhumita’s mother-in-law and according to the narrative, her character holds an extremely strong position in Mithi’s life. Neel Mukherjee will be seen as Mithi’s father-in-law.

According to Madhumita, her character in the film believes that her surname is the legacy of her family. She respects her in-laws but at the same time can go to any extent to stick to her ideals.

Does the actress support the idea of keeping the maiden name after marriage? During a recent media interaction, Madhumita said that she was married once and she changed her maiden surname before she got divorced. But with time she has become mature enough to understand that changing surname can’t be a necessary thing. And, after doing ‘Kuler Achaar’, she has realized that people need to adhere to certain convictions in life. She also clarifies that this film is not only deals with the subject of surname change but it also raises questions about many other social conventions.
