Jaya Ahsan wants more Bengali films like ‘Crisscross’ which would focus on female leads. The Bangladeshi actress feels sad to see even in the 21st century there are not many Bengali movies which have female lead characters. Jaya also sought examples from Bollywood. Films like ‘Raazi’, ‘Queen’ have already broken stereotypes. She believes Bengali viewers will very soon develop a taste for films that focus on female actors in pivotal roles. “Believe it or not, it’s still a male-dominated industry. Even Bollywood took quite some time to adjust to the new trend. People who love to watch Hindi films have already developed a much more refined taste. It’s good for the industry. I believe, a change will definitely come to Bengali cinema as well,” said the Bangladeshi actress.
Jaya Ahsan has played a successful businesswoman with erratic mood swings in Birsa Dasgupta’s recently released ‘Crisscross’. Although this intense social drama has been termed as a women-centric film, she doesn’t like the idea of calling ‘Crisscross’ a female-oriented film.
“Do we use the word male-oriented? See, I don’t believe in gender segregation, just like my character in ‘Crisscross’. You can’t just limit the personality of Miss Sen as a man or a woman. That’s why I loved the character. It has also brought loneliness upon me to prove I am self-dependent,” added Jaya.
