For Birsa Dasgupta, attempting to make an out-an-out comedy through a commercial Bengali film has not been any short of a challenge. He has taken this step with his latest Bibaho Obhijaan and seems quite pleased with the outcome. “Honestly, people hardly watch Bengali mainstream cinema these days. So, the expectation is to see the regular Bangla cinema watching audience at the theatres. It will be good to watch this movie as a fun film and look beyond the obvious stream divisions,” said Birsa, adding, “It has got a good opening. People from all walks of life and every age group seem to be enjoying the shows. The movie is meant for people, who want to have unadulterated fun.” The director urges the audience to just laugh freely for two hours without judging or carrying any baggage on their minds. He thinks it’s important to just be happy in what he calls “in these times of despair”. “Come free. Leave free. Laugh your heart out while in. I have worked with a brilliant cast, which makes the journey all the more memorable. Ankush is a hero who can act. His comic timing is fantastic. Rudro, Sohini, Priyanka, Ambarish, we all know, are fantastic actors,” he said, adding, “Faria is naturally upbeat and spontaneous, she was very good to work with too. Anirban Bhattacharya is a revelation. He has not done comedy on the big screen before this. That too he is seen in a mainstream comedy, where he plays villain.”
While the film awaits its fate at the theatres that will be known once all the collections are in, the director is happy to have had a good opening, which he says, is a rare thing nowadays.
