Was quite nervous about stammering: Sohini Sarkar on her character in Vinci Da

Actress Sohini Sarkar said that more than the screen time of her character, she was attracted to its graph in the film directed by Srijit Mukherji.

Actress Sohini Sarkar has shared her experience of working in Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film Vinci Da in a video released by SVF Entertainment Pvt Ltd.

Sarkar plays Jaya, a simple girl who stammers and is in love with the protagonist Vinci Da, played by Rudranil Ghosh.

Sarkar said she was approached by Mukherji in August last year with the role. “Whenever I get a call from Srijitda, I start wishing for good work,” she said. She has worked previously with the filmmaker on Rajkahini (2015).

The actress said that more than the screen time of her character, she was attracted to its graph in the film. “Jaya is a sweet girl. She is a rare kind of girl as she in extremely straight in her thought process and simple. Whatever she feels in her heart is reflected in her eyes and face,” she explained.

As Jaya stammers, she is often looked down upon by people or turns into a victim of pity. “She faces problems in getting married,” said Sarkar, “And she looks for true love, which she eventually finds.” Sarkar said that whenever she looks at the character of Jaya, she feels good about life.

The most difficult aspect of portraying Jaya was to stammer authentically. “I was quite nervous and had discussions with both Srijitda and Rudrada [Ghosh] regarding that aspect as I have seen audiences to be extremely particular about the act of stammering,” said the actress.

“When Srijitda was reading out the lines for me, he stressed on certain words in a way that made me laugh quite a lot. I could gradually take up stammering by listening to both Srijitda and Rudrada’s instructions as they told me to stress on particular words. I had to practise for a month, but I was still not confident about the spontaneity of my act.”

Also starring Ritwick Chakraborty and Anirban Bhattacharya, Vinci Da is slated for release on 12 April.
