After Chotushkone, Srijit Mukherji is returning to his favourite genre of films, thrillers, with Vinci Da. And the genre is not just his favourite; even the Bengali moviegoers — seasoned as they are with hearty doses of Feludas and Byomkeshes over the years — have an almost insatiable hunger for thrillers.
Srijit wants to fuel that hunger with this story of a struggling yet vastly talented makeup artist (played by Rudranil Ghosh), who crosses paths with a serial killer (played by Ritwick Chakraborty), who thinks he’s just a ‘serial lawyer’. “A thriller is possibly my favourite genre of filmmaking, as right from my childhood, I guess I’ve read all the possible thrillers in almost every language,” said Srijit, whose Baishe Srabon and Chotushkone were both thrillers, with the latter being his personal favourite.
So, how is Vinci Da different from Baishe Srabon or Chotushkone? “Both Vinci Da and Chotushkone are revenge dramas, but as a thriller, Vinci Da is different from both my earlier films, as these were whodunnits; Vinci Da is not,” Srijit told us. “In the trailer itself, we can see who’s doing what, so Vinci Da is rather about how and why the crime is committed. In the film, the killer, Adi Bose’s mind works in a way somewhat similar to those of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, who murdered a 14-year-old in Chicago in 1924 just to prove that they were intellectually superior men and could get away with murder.”
The film’s titular character is a makeup artist struggling to carve his own niche in the industry based solely on his talent. Despite being the son of a renowned makeup artist and being highly talented, he fails to make a mark. On top of that, being the straight talker he is, he insults three bigwigs of the industry, making the situation worse. And just when his life starts going haywire, Adi Bose enters his life. What happens next, of course, is something we’ll get to know once the film releases in theatres.
