Sandip Ray’s first film adaptation of Shonku, ‘Professor Shonku O El Dorado’ (2019) is already making all the right noise ahead of its December 20 release and now, the next film in the Shonku franchise has also been announced. It will be based on his father Satyajit Ray’s story ‘Ek Sringo Obhijaan’. Dhritiman Chatterjee will reprise the role of Shonku in this film as well. But there’s one condition that Sandip Ray will be monitoring closely.
“I am willing to make more films on Baba’s stories on Professor Shonku. The problem is that the stories are not long enough to be made into feature films. Ek Sringo Obhijaan is the only story that can be adapted for a full-length feature film,” Sandip Ray revealed during a recent media interaction.
However, he insisted whether this film will happen or not, will entirely depend on the success of ‘Professor Shonku O El Dorado’. He has other short stories in mind as well.
In case, ‘Ek Sringo Obhijan’ doesn’t happen, the critically acclaimed filmmaker will make a ‘Double Shonku’, just like he did with ‘Double Feldua’, and will adapt two short Shonku stories in a single film.
Meanwhile, ‘Professor Shonku O El Dorado’ is based on Ray’s story ‘Nakur Babu O El Dorado’. Subhasish Mukhopadhyay plays Nakur Babu, a clairvoyant, in the film. He visits Shonku’s laboratory in Giridih and warns him about the impending dangers at a fictional place called El Dorado in Sau Paulo, Brazil. What happens next forms the crux of the film.
