The film is based on the controversial Bhawal sanyasi court case, a historical trial that created a storm in the judicial system of British India during the 1930s.
The first look of the characters in Srijit Mukherji’s upcoming film Ek Je Chhilo Raja has been unveiled by SVF Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. The film is based on the controversial Bhawal sanyasi court case, a historical trial that created a storm in the judicial system of British India during the 1930s.
The official poster of the film shows a throne amidst the ruins of a palace. A portrait of Bhawal Raja Mahendra Kumar, in his hunter avatar, is hung above it. A queer looking man, with dread locks and scars, wearing Rudraksha, is sitting before the throne.
The man with uncanny resemblance with the king in the portrait behind is a sanyasi played by Jisshu Sengupta. The sanyasi makes his appearance exactly 12 years after the Bhawal Raja of Bikrampur estate was presumed to have died of syphilis in Darjeeling. The sister of the Raja identifies the sanyasi to be the Kumar, while his wife Bibhabati refuses to recognise him.
In a few years, the sanyasi files a declaratory suit claiming the name and the property of the Kumar and hence, begins the trial, involving conspiracies, revenge and intrigue.
Somnath Kundu and Saborni Das both have done a brilliant job as the make-up artist and the stylist in bringing alive the authenticity of the characters of the period drama. Sengupta’s haunting look as the sanyasi, smeared in ashes, looks extremely real, capable of generating a lot of anticipation. Also, the transformation of Jaya Ahsan as the aged widow seems remarkable.
The producers have also disclosed the looks of Rajnandini Paul, Anirban Bhattacharya and Rudranil Ghosh, while they are planning to reveal the avatars of Anjan Dutt and Aparna Sen later for promotional purpose.
“The remarkable tale of the story of the Bhawal Raja has been told and retold in a lot of fictional works. All the actors in my film Ek Je Chhilo Raja have played their part brilliantly and the surprise element comes in the form of Anjan Dutt and Aparna Sen that will be revealed later,” stated the director.
Ek Je Chhilo Raja is slated to be released on 12 October.
