His last ‘Gumnaami’ became a massive hit this Puja. Anirban Bhattacharya literally ruled the screen. And now, the brilliant actor has again floored everyone with his natural acting in Aparna Sen’s ‘Ghawre Bairey Aaj’ which released yesterday. He plays Nikhilesh in the socio-political drama which is a modern-day take on Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Ghare baire’.
Since Anirban’s performance has been lapped by one and all, we asked the versatile actor how was it playing the iconic character in the film which Aparna Sen by her own admission calls the most politically outspoken film she has ever made.
“More than getting acclimatized with the movie’s political standing or knowing how much roleplay politics has in this film, it was important to understand the psyche of Nikhilesh, and invade his mind, to get into the skin of the character. The way I think or react is far apart from how Nikhilesh reacts to any situation,” explains the ‘Vinci Da’ actor.
Anirban also revealed how he slipped into the character: “Nikhilesh is the ultimate modern man in the process of evolution, almost utopian. I am a man of moderate resources and talent, who is impulsive, reactive and gets agitated as a human being. Playing Nikhilesh’s character has not only brought me closer to him as a person, but also made me more aware of my shortcomings, which evokes a sense of failure in me — when I can’t deal with a situation in real life, the way he does.”
While Anirban plays Nikhilesh in the film, jisshu Sengupta dons the role of Sandip and newcomer Tuhina Das plays Brinda.
