Based on Leversage’s story, Uma is based on a girl who suffers from a terminal disease and wishes to travel to Kolkata, for the last time, to see Durga Puja.

Leversage suffered from brain tumour and had wished to experience the last Christmas of his life. Wellwood, fearing her son’s untimely death, fulfilled his last wish and with the help of St George town, Ontario, threw a Christmas party with artificial snow and Santa Claus in March.
“I came across a news article on Facebook about Evan’s final Christmas and was instantly inspired,” Mukherji said, adding, “This act of incredible humanity moved me to tears and immediately I decided to tell his story to a greater audience.”

Uma tells a similar story, in which a girl (Sara Sengupta) with a terminal disease wishes to travel to Kolkata, for the last time, to see Durga Puja, which takes place in Autumn. However, her father (Jisshu Sengupta) seems to be in a fix, as it is the month of March and she doesn’t have much time left. Therefore, he appoints an unsuccessful filmmaker (Anjan Dutt) to recreate the entire festival with his crew.
Wellwood was, reportedly, sceptical about the film when Mukherji first approached her, as she was then dealing with her son’s death (Leversage died on 6 December, 2015). “I eventually believed him,” she said. “He has a huge heart. I see that through my conversations with him. He is truly inspired by Evan,” she added.
Mukherji, on the other hand, said, “I think in these times of violence and hatred all across the world, Evan’s story is a kind of incredible exception.”
The film is also going to be released at three film festivals in Canada later this year. Motivated to move on with her life ahead now, Wellwood said, “I am happy and so ridiculously proud of Evan.”
