It was Rabindranath Tagore’s novel Ghare Baire that inspired Satyajit Ray to make a film on it with the same title back in 1984. Cut to 2018, Ray’s Ghaire Baire has now inspired Aparna Sen to come up with a contemporary version of the romantic drama. Titled E Juger Ghare Baire, the film starring Jisshu U Sengupta, Tuhina Das and Anirban Bhattacharya is a modern retelling of the love triangle between Tagore’s central characters — Nikhilesh, Sandip and Bimala. “It is as much a story of passionate romance as it is of clashing ideologies in the present times and the way these clashes affect love and friendship,” said Aparna, whose last directorial outing was Arshinagar in 2015.
When asked what prompted her to remake the classic, she replied, “It was on the night of Gauri Lankesh’s murder. After watching the news, I went to bed shaken to the very core of my being. What is happening to my country, I wondered; why are the voices of reason and moderation being silenced so brutally? That night I dreamt about a young, first-time director — a Satyajit Ray fan — remaking Ghare Baire, set in today’s time. I woke up and realised that director was actually me! Because whenever I make a film, I treat is as my first. And filmmaking makes me feel forever young.”
Tagore’s Ghare Baire was set in the turbulent times of pre-Independence India. It is about how the trio’s domestic relationship is affected by what’s happening in the outside world.
My film is also about the passionate relationship between Nikhilesh, Bimala and Sandip, but it is set against the turbulent political scenario of today’s India,” informed Aparna. In the original film, Victor Banerjee played Nikhilesh Chowdhury while Swatilekha Sengupta essayed the role of his beautiful wife, Bimala. Soumitra Chatterjee was the radical revolutionist Sandip — a contrast to the peace-loving and somewhat passive Nikhilesh — who attracted Bimala, thus creating a love triangle. In E Juger Ghare Baire, Jisshu plays Sandip. At 22, he is seen as an angry, leftist student. And at 42, he plays an old nationalist leader. The role of Bimala will be essayed by Tuhina, who plays a young Dalit girl named Brinda Chowdhury. Anirban plays Nikhilesh Chowdhury — the publishing editor of an online newspaper, which is known for its progressive and liberal views. Said an excited Jisshu, “Being a part of Rina pishi’s film is a huge honour. So is the opportunity to play a character that was earlier played by Soumitra jethu. Matching him is no mean feat, so I will play my part as per Rina pishi’s suggestions. She will be conducting workshops soon. Sandip is well read, suave and has a modern, liberal outlook.”
This is Tuhina’s second Tollywood outing after Asche Abar Shabar. “I once did a workshop with Rinadi. Every meeting with her fills me with a sense of awe. The way she explains a scene is simply mind-blowing. In the film, I play Brinda, which was Bimala in Satyajit Ray’s Ghare Baire. Brinda is madly in love with her husband, Nikhilesh. But Sandip enters her life as a breath of fresh air. Brinda is in a lot of ways different from Bimala, in her upbringing and childhood. Working with Rinadi is a dream come true for any artiste,” said the actress who is on cloud nine ever since she bagged the role.
The film, which will go on the floors from September 21, will be shot in Kolkata, Bolpur and other places. Soumik Haldar is the man behind the camera.
