Tangra Blues

Extensively shot in one of the most notorious slums of Kolkata – Tangra; Tangra Blues tells the story of a young music-maker Joyee (played by Madhumita), who escapes the glitz of Mumbai to reside in his father’s posh apartment adjacent to Tangra. In her course of living in Kolkata, she is fascinated by the performance of a music band, made solely out of the raw talents of young slum kids. With time she encounters Sanjib Mondal (played by Parambrata Chatterjee), the leader of the band and also an ex-gang member, who eventually changes the course of Joyee’s life. The film, in a nutshell, neatly depicts the turmoil in characters’ lives, their jubilant musical journey and violent gang wars, the politician-builder nexus- all of which come together to present a checkered landscape that emerges from the fringe of Kolkata where underdogs refuse to die and rewrite their destiny through music.
