In director Debaloy Bhattacharya’s Bidaay Byomkesh, a crime takes place in the Byomkesh family. The octogenarian Byomkesh passes on the responsibility of solving the murder mystery to his grandson, Satyaki. The film explores whether it is the end of Byomkesh saga or a new beginning for the iconic detective. Both Abir Chatterjee and Sohini Sarkar will be seen in double roles — the former playing the aged detective and Satyaki, and the latter playing Byomkesh’s wife, Satyabati, and Satyaki’s girlfriend, Tunna. We spoke to Abir, Sohini, Rahul Banerjee and the director about the Byomkesh spinoff and here’s what they have to say… Abir : Playing a double role is very interesting. The film is a journey of the human being and the master sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi as he struggles to find himself. Byomkesh’s grandson is taken aback on learning about his missing father and the fact that he has been accused of murder. His grandfather’s inability to tackle the situation makes him furious. For all these years, we’ve seen Byomkesh unravelling a mystery or solving a crime, but in this film, Byomkesh’s own son is involved in a crime. Whether Satyaki will be able to carry forward his family’s legacy is what forms the crux of the film.

Sohini : Satyabati is present as a shadow in Byomkesh’s mind and acts as his moral guide. As Tunna, I play an important role in solving the crime.

Rahul : I play Ajit. Though small, the role is significant. Ajit is Byomkesh’s alter ego, whom he speaks to when he’s alone. It’s great to work with a team where most of the cast members are your close buddies. And Debaloy is one of the wackiest people in the industry.

Debaloy: Byomkesh’s son goes missing and he is too old to fight crime. Then he gets the news that his son has surrendered to the police, claiming that he has murdered someone. Byomkesh seeks Satyaki’s help and the film takes a turn from there.
